How to Apply for a US Passport

One of my clients didn’t have his passport! If that’s you too, then read the instructions below!

Instructions for Obtaining a U.S. Passport (Adults and Children Under 16)

For Adults (First-Time Passport Applicants):

  1. Complete Form DS-11: This is the application form for a U.S. passport. You can fill it out online or print it and complete it by hand. The form is available on the U.S. Department of State website.

  2. Gather Necessary Documents:

    • Proof of U.S. citizenship (e.g., a certified birth certificate or a naturalization certificate)

    • Government-issued photo ID (e.g., driver’s license)

    • A passport photo (available at many pharmacies or photo services)

  3. Submit the Application in Person: As a first-time applicant, you’ll need to apply in person at a passport acceptance facility, such as a post office or county clerk's office. You can locate one on the U.S. Department of State website.

  4. Pay the Fees:

    • The standard passport book fee for adults is $130 with an additional $35 execution fee.

    • You can pay extra for expedited service if you need your passport sooner.

  5. Processing Time:

    • Standard processing takes 10-13 weeks.

    • Expedited service takes 5-7 weeks for an additional fee.

    • For urgent travel, you can book an appointment at a regional passport agency.

For Children Under 16:

  1. Complete Form DS-11: Similar to the process for adults, you'll need to complete this form on behalf of your children.

  2. Gather Necessary Documents:

    • Proof of U.S. citizenship for each child (e.g., certified birth certificate)

    • Parental identification (e.g., driver’s license or passport)

    • Passport photo for each child (available at many pharmacies or professional photo services)

    • Proof of parental relationship (e.g., birth certificate showing parents' names)

  3. Both Parents Must Apply in Person with the Child:

    • Both parents (or guardians) need to be present to apply for the passport in person, along with the child, at a passport acceptance facility.

    • If one parent cannot be present, a notarized consent form (Form DS-3053) signed by the absent parent must be provided. Additional documentation may be required for legal guardians or when the child has only one legal parent.

  4. Pay the Fees:

    • The passport fee for children under 16 is $100, with an additional $35 execution fee.

    • Expedited service is available for an additional cost.

  5. Processing Time:

    • The processing time for a child’s passport is the same as for adults: 10-13 weeks for standard service and 5-7 weeks for expedited service.

    • If you need the passport faster, you can request an appointment at a regional passport agency.

By following these steps for both adults and children, you'll be all set for your family trip!
